How did I do it? Magic! Or: I started at the outside and wrote my way to the middle. Deleted quite a bit along the way, of course. The outside is still kind of rough, but I think by the time I got to the middle (hours and hours, I tell you) I sort of had it figured out. So, so difficult. So, so worth it. You just have to hold those two thought patterns in your head at the same time and work around the words to bring them through.
